A Simple Trick for Picking (and remembering) a Good Password

Change User Password Without Knowing the Current Password in PC

If you want to change the user password of Windows in your computer but you don’t know the current password, there is an easy way to do this. First of all, the user that you are on has to be an administrator user. To determine what type of user your are logged in with go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts. At the bottom of the window you will see the different users that are on your computer. Find your user and under the user name it will say what type of user account you are. Your user needs to be a computer administrator to change the password without knowing the current password.

Let’s get started!

1. Click on the Start button and select “Run”

The Run window will appear. Type into it the text, “cmd” (without the quotes). Click OK

2. The CMD window nd will appear. Type “net user”

A list of all the users that are on the computer will appear.

3.  Type the following: net user *

For example, if the user I want to change passwords for is Mike, I would type in:
net user Mike *

4. Press enter and you will be asked to type in a new password.

Type in your new password. The cursor will not move nore will it seem like anything is happening but your new password will be entered.

5. You will be asked to confirm your new password. Enter it again and press enter.

Samsung Braces for Next Battleground With Google

Samsung made itself the brand to beat in the crowded smartphone space by backing Google’s Android software –- 96 percent of the South Korean company’s shipments ran on the platform. Now, it’s planning a high-end smartphone powered by Intel-backed open-source platform Tizen.

The new phone, out as soon as August, is good news for those geeks and independent-minded consumers of the tech zone who are crying out for open-source gadgets. Maybe less so for Apple and Google, who face another challenger in the battle to dominate the platform for global mobile communications.

But Samsung had best beware. Growing competition from Samsung as a maker of high-end smartphones has already turned Apple from its most-valuable customer to an increasingly bitter rival. Does Google’s move into handsets after last year’s acquisition of Motorola put the writing on the wall for that relationship too?

Samsung’s efforts to lessen its reliance on Android by designing its own software Bada – “the sea” in Korean – haven’t yet produced a credible alternative. Nor have phones powered by Microsoft’s OS. Enter Tizen.

“This is just sort of a safety net,” said Doh Hyun Woo, an analyst for Seoul-based Mirae Asset Securities. “But if Google dominates the market just like Microsoft did in the PC market with more than 90 percent share, it may prove the total opposite,” with Google possibly holding this over Samsung’s head.

The big question for Samsung and Google – and Apple, too – is whether consumers learn to live with multiple operating systems, or whether one comes to dominate and the rest are left to wither (who remembers Betamax?).

11:15 a.m. Facebook’s searchable event has come to an end.

11:12 a.m. Hey, Zuck! Remember that company you agreed to spend $1 billion on? Will we be able to search for Instagram photos? “That should be on the list of things that we will hopefully one day get to,” Zuckerberg said.

11:09 a.m. Facebook added search suggestions on the right of the screen based on user testing, Stocky said. “Like all products, we have a way of testing it with users.” Facebook has to adjust to people having been trained to formulate search queries in weirdo computer speak, like, “friends new york,” Zuckerberg said. Facebook’s search was designed to handle queries that sound like something you might say out loud, not just to a computer.

11:06 a.m. Zuckerberg said Facebook held exploratory talks with Google about the search engine. “Microsoft was more willing to do things that were specific to Facebook,” Zuckerberg said. “That was the biggest stumbling block.” He added: “That is, at least, where the discussion fell apart the last time that we talked to [Google] about it.”

11:04 a.m. The new Facebook search will only work in English for now, Zuckerberg said. Facebook “had to draw the line” about what it wanted to accomplish, and natural-language computing is tough, Zuckerberg said.

11:03 a.m. People aren’t going to stop using Google in favor of the search box. Sure, the Facebook search will include results from Bing, Zuckerberg said. “We don’t have any concept that people are going to come to Facebook to do Web search,” he said.

11:01 a.m. My colleague Brian Womack asked whether there was any consideration whatsoever of working with Google on the Facebook search tool. “I would love to work with Google,” Zuckerberg said with a smirk. “We would love to work with any search company … as long as the companies are willing to honor the privacy of the folks that are sharing their content on Facebook.”

10:57 a.m. So … you run a public company now, right? How is this going to make money? “This could potentially be a business over time,” Zuckerberg said. The search engine will follow the same philosophy that made Facebook a money-losing business — until it wasn’t. ”You build a good business over time by building something people want,” Zuckerberg said.

10:56 a.m. Uber tech blogger Robert Scoble asked if developers will be able to tap into Facebook’s search engine for their applications. Not at the start, Zuckerberg said. “We have years and years of work ahead of us.”

10:54 a.m. First question is about privacy. Expect many more of these. Zuckerberg said no new data is being surfaced in the search engine that’s not already available somewhere in the rest of the Facebook site.

10:53 a.m. After a brief video set to the tune of a Sigur Ros song, Zuckerberg concluded the presentation. “Graph Search is the kind of product that we love to build at Facebook,” Zuckerberg said. “What you’ve seen today is a really different product from what’s out there.” Facebook executives will begin taking questions from the journalists in the room.

10:50 a.m. Don’t expect to use the new Facebook search feature any time soon. “We’re going to start rolling it out very slowly,” Zuckerberg said. “We need to start getting data on how people use it in order to improve the product.” Facebook will turn search on for more people “over the coming weeks and months,” Zuckerberg said.

10:48 a.m.  ”There’s one more thing,” Zuckerberg said. Like the old Facebook search engine, the new one will integrate with Microsoft’s Bing. So if you search for weather, Bing steps in.

10:46 a.m. Zuckerberg took the stage again after the demo. ”This is one of the coolest things we’ve done in a while,” he said. Zuckerberg emphasized the privacy protections, and said the company will allow people to tinker with their settings before the feature rolls out. “We’re going to put an encouragement on the home screen of everyone’s account,” he said.

10:44 a.m. Now for the requisite bit about privacy. “We realized that people are going to care about what shows up about them in search,” Stocky said. Pay careful attention to this lesson, kids. You’ll probably be walking your parents through this at the next holiday get-together. On the site’s “privacy settings” page, users can see what shows up in search and turn things off selectively.

10:41 a.m. Many of these features don’t seem very useful unless you and your friends use Facebook religiously. For example, Rasmussen types in: ”restaurants liked by my friends in India.” How many Facebook friends do you have in India?

10:39 a.m. Rasmussen took over for the “places” portion of the demo. His expertise in building Google Maps surely came in handy with this. Facebook’s place search appears to be the feature that aims most directly at Google’s Maps and Zagat. The tool enables users to find restaurants based on friends’ recommendations. “But it doesn’t have to be limited to your friends,” Rasmussen said.

10:34 a.m. The “interests” portion of Facebook search offers lots of recommendations. Stocky searched for movies and television shows his friends have “Liked” on Facebook. The page also lists programs that are similar to the shows his friends like, based on other data. “For people like me, who spend hours staring blankly at my Netflix queue, this is the solution to that,” Stocky said.

10:30 a.m. More use cases: Rasmussen was planning a hypothetical hike, and searched for: “Photos of my friends taken in national parks.” And in case you want to see pictures of your friends when they were babies or had awesome feathered hairdos, search for: “photos of my friends taken before 1990.”

10:25 a.m. OK, this is starting to make sense. Let’s say you meet someone at a party, and can’t remember her name, but you know some other details. Search for, say, “people who are friends of Lars and went to Stanford.”

10:20 a.m. Stocky and Rasmussen ran a search query to find out which of their friends like both “Star Wars” and “Harry Potter.” Hopefully there are more uses for this besides organizing “cosplay” parties.

10:19 a.m. Zuckerberg gave the example of throwing a “Game of Thrones” party. But he didn’t know who of his friends are fans of the HBO show. So he did a Facebook search. Simple enough. Rasmussen and Tom Stocky have taken the stage to demonstrate more.

10:16 a.m. The search engine is called Graph Search. Lars Rasmussen, a Google Maps co-founder, worked on it. (Bloomberg Businessweek broke that news almost a year ago.) “I want to emphasize how early we are in Graph Search,” Zuckerberg said. The initial version will cover content about people, photos, places and interests, he said. “These cases are really useful.”

10:13 a.m. “We spent a long time working on this, and we came up with an interface that we think is unique,” Zuckerberg said. “Filters.” A slide shows a page full of tags, like the old Delicious. The crowd is a bit confused for a moment. “No, that’s my joke,” Zuckerberg said. More nerd humor.

10:12 a.m. Zuckerberg’s first example to demonstrate the difference between Facebook’s social-networking search and Google’s Web search is, ”What is hip hop?” Something tells me he’s not a rap fan.

10:10 a.m. The third pillar of Facebook will be a search, Zuckerberg said. But this isn’t Web search, like Google, he added. “The search that we wanted to build is privacy-aware,” he said.

10:08 a.m. Zuckerberg’s version of nostalgia is pretty geeky. He said Facebook is all about “queries.” Zuckerberg introduces the concept of “the pillars of the Facebook product ecosystem.” News Feed, for example, is “what is going on in the world around you.” The second pillar is the Timeline profiles. He said Facebook is announcing its third pillar.

10:04 a.m. The stark white room here at Facebook’s Building 13 is full of journalists tapping away at keyboards. Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg has just taken the stage.

9:50 a.m. In about 10 minutes or so, Facebook will finally unveil its latest projects. Executives have remained mum about what to expect since the company sent out invitations last week. Investors are sure to watch this event closely for potential moneymakers, especially those catered to smartphone users. And the 1 billion or so people who check the site regularly should be curious to see how Facebook will try to suck up more of their time. I’ll be posting updates here from the news conference at Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California — in between refreshing my News Feed.

First Impressions of Facebook’s New Graph Search

If you follow directions, Facebook’s new search engine is pretty amazing. But veer off course, and the results reveal just how limited the tool is right now.

During an event today at its headquarters in Menlo Park, California, Facebook introduced Graph Search, a drastically revamped version of the social  network’s search function. Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg called this feature as important to the site as the News Feed on the homepage and the Timeline profiles. It’s also the most nascent.

The promise of social search is compelling. For example, I might be more interested in movies my friends enjoy rather than whatever gets the highest ratings from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

A tiny slice of Facebook’s 1 billion users were provided with a beta version of Graph Search today. For the past few hours, I’ve been testing the tool on my profile, sifting through my groups of friends.

When first clicking on the search box, which now takes up most of the blue toolbar on the top of the website, I’m presented with a personalized tour of the new search features. It starts by showing me how I can search for people who went to the University of Maryland (my alma mater). Then it shows my unique results and a bunch of familiar faces.

From then on, the search box presents six sample queries whenever I activate it, such as “my friends,” “music my friends like” and “restaurants nearby.” I can choose any of those, click to see more suggestions or enter my own search terms. Once on the results page, a list of optional filters guides me on how to further refine my search.

The search engine currently handles four main categories: people, photos, places and interests. There are lots of options within those groups. For example, I can find friends who like Coldplay (so that I can unfriend them), or I can look up pictures taken before 1990 or at the Empire State Building. I can also find movies my friends like or search by genres such as rock music, comedy films and Italian restaurants.

The results are surprising because there was previously no good way to unlock Facebook’s trove of data about my contacts. However, the system is a little slow. First, the natural-language processing needs to figure out what framework my query fits into, and then display that beneath the search box. Then it needs to dig through all of my data. Multiply that by a billion. To be fair, those are challenging tasks. “We have years and years of work ahead of us,” Zuckerberg said at the event today.

Facebook’s search engine, as in previous versions, can pull in Web results from Microsoft’s Bing. The pages look a little different from those you might see on Bing.com, and they include additional data that Facebook sprinkles on top, said Lars Rasmussen, a former Google executive who is a director of engineering on Facebook’s search project.

But if you were hoping to use this as your one-stop search shop, look elsewhere. The method for doing a Web search on Facebook is fairly cumbersome. If I type “weather,” the system suggests I check out the Facebook pages for the Weather Channel or Weather Underground, or people whose last names have the word “weather” in them. I need to click “See more” in the auto-complete list, and then scroll down before even getting the option to do a traditional search.

For Facebook, building its own Web-crawling technology is “nowhere” on the company’s list of priorities, Rasmussen said in an interview after the presentation today. This effort is about tapping into all the information Facebook has locked away on its servers.

In addition to making the whole process snappier, Facebook plans to add more languages, open it up to applications from outside developers and bring in more types of data. Facebook’s own events and messages apps aren’t integrated yet. A search for “parties next week” returns a suggestion for “people who party.” (The people on this list aren’t as cool as you might expect, judging by their profile pictures.)

“We need to start getting data on how people use it in order to improve the product,” Zuckerberg said. But that won’t be a quick process. “We’re going to start rolling it out very slowly,” he said.

During the news conference, Facebook executives emphasized their attention to privacy. Before the search feature is rolled out widely, users will be prompted to review their settings on what content is shown publicly, they said.

Facebook’s search engine is an impressive first effort, but like other recent entrants, it has a long way to go before you can expect to rely on it. Just ask Siri. If she’ll understand you, that is.

Set the iPad to self-destruct in 10 seconds:
Okay, not really--but you can set the iPad to erase all data after ten failed passcode entry attempts by checking the Erase Data option under Settings, General, Passcode Lock.  

Don't let AutoCorrect mess you up: If you don't like the option AutoCorrect gives you, reject it by finishing the word as you prefer, and then tapping the suggestion. If you want to use AutoCorrect's choice, just type a space or punctuation mark, or tap Return, the moment it pops up.

Create custom shortcuts for common phrases: Make AutoCorrect work for you by teaching iOS to transform shorthand (such as "omw") into common phrases (like "on my way") using iOS 5 shortcuts. Simply navigate to Settings, General, Keyboard, and select Add New Shortcut. Selectively prevent automatic sync: Sometimes you don't want to sync your iPad when you connect it to your computer. In that case, hold down Shift-Ctrl (or Command-Option, on a Mac) in iTunes while plugging your iPad in, and iTunes will skip the automatic sync just this once. Alternatively, you can safely interrupt a sync by dragging the unlock slider on your device while the iPad is midsync.

Toggle 3G/LTE data roaming: If you're using a 3G iPad, you can turn data roaming on in the Settings, Cellular Data menu in case you want to try receiving cellular Internet through a different provider (fees may apply). You can also disable LTE service if you're trying to conserve bandwidth, and you can check your data usage by going to Settings, General, Usage.

Restrict mature content: Go to Settings, General, Restrictions and tap Enable Restrictions to selectively apply controls on your apps, content, Game Center, and more. You can use this setting to limit mature content on your new iPad by disabling explicit-language recognition, blocking podcasts that have the "Explicit" tag, or blocking movies, TV shows, and apps that are rated for mature audiences.

Make your passcode more complicated: iOS defaults to a four-number passcode, but you can turn it off by going to Settings, General, Passcode Lock, Simple Passcode. Now you can use any full keyboard password to lock the iPad. The password also helps to encrypt your mail and attachments on the iPad, so you probably want to make it safer than a four-digit number.

Tweak AutoFill: You can choose to enable Safari's AutoFill feature under Settings, Safari, AutoFill. From there you can tell Safari to fill out forms automatically, either by using your specified contact information or by remembering the names and passwords from previous website login sessions.

Sync your bookmarks: You can use iTunes to sync your iPad's Safari bookmarks with your PC's Web browser. Open the iPad tab in iTunes, click the Info tab, scroll down to the Other heading, check Sync bookmarks with, and choose your preferred browser.

Email photos: The easiest way to email photos from an iPad is to open the Photos app, select a photo, press the button in the upper-right corner (the rectangle with the right-facing arrow, not the AirPlay or trash can button), and choose Email photo... to send.

Test your Web links: You can check a linked word's actual destination URL by touching and holding down on the link--it's a perfect way to sniff out phishy links.

Choose an app for email attachments: You can open a file attached to an email message by tapping the attachment in Mail, but if the default app isn't the one you want to use, simply press and hold and wait for a menu that lets you select an app.

Use your iPad as a picture frame: Not for physical photographs of course, but you can press the Picture icon in the lower-right corner of the lock screen to have the iPad display your photo stream as a slideshow.

Show traffic conditions: Open Maps, press the dog-eared page icon in the lower right, and then turn the Traffic overlay on. If your iPad has an Internet connection, Maps will show real-time traffic conditions in the displayed area. Green means traffic is going at the posted speed limit, yellow means traffic is slower than the posted speed limit, and red means traffic is stop-and-go.

Share podcasts with friends: Listening to a podcast that you think a friend would like? You can share the link while you're listening to it by pressing the Email button while it's open.

Don't forget your downloads: You can immediately see if your iTunes account is due for incoming downloads by opening iTunes on your PC, clicking the Store menu, and selecting Check for available downloads. This trick can come in handy if your download process is interrupted, or if you missed some bonus iTunes content that came with an album you purchased.

Turn on Universal Access: You can enable options such as closed-captioned movies, VoiceOver screen reading, zoom magnification, and inverted white-on-black text by selecting the iPad in iTunes, opening the Summary tab, and clicking Configure Universal Access under the Options heading.

Forget Wi-Fi networks: So you accidentally connected to a network once, and your iPad remembers it for life--whether you like it or not. On your iPad, go to Settings, Wi-Fi, and find the network under the 'Choose a Network' heading. Tap the blue arrow next to the network you want to remove, and tap the button on the top that says Forget this Network.

Customize your Spotlight searches: The iPad uses Spotlight for its built-in search functions, and you can tweak it to your needs under Settings, General, Spotlight Search. If you have a lot of data on your iPad, for example, you can selectively disable search in different categories (Contacts, Applications, Audiobooks, Notes, Events, Mail, and so on) that you don't use so that your desired results show up faster. You can also simply change the order in which the search-result categories display by dragging them up and down, so that your more frequently used search categories appear at the top of the page.

Turn off in-app purchases: Go to Settings, General, Restrictions and tap Enable Restrictions to selectively enable restrictions for your apps, content, Game Center, and more. If you're worried about other people breaking your bank account on in-app purchases, just disable In-App Purchases under the 'Allowed Content' setting.

Switch up the fetching frequency: Your iPad automatically grabs new data, such as incoming email. However, the iPad also periodically activates apps that don't support iOS's Push feature so that they can go fetch new data--which uses the tablet's battery life. You can tweak your Push and Fetch settings in Settings under the Mail, Contacts, Calendars menu by toggling the Fetch New Data option.

Change your email signature: Don't be one of those people who leave the default 'Sent from my iPad' signature on all their messages. Change it in Settings, Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Signature to something more interesting.

Master multitasking gesture controls: Enable multitasking gesture controls in any iPad running iOS 5 or later by navigating to General, Settings and toggling Multitasking Gestures on. Now you can place four or five fingers on the screen at once and swipe them left or right to switch between open apps, or swipe up to display the multitasking bar. You can pinch your fingers together on the screen to return to the iPad home screen.

Sync your iPad wirelessly: To set up iTunes wireless syncing, plug your iPad into your PC, make sure both devices are connected to the same wireless network, and then boot up iTunes on your PC. On your iPad, navigate to Settings, General, iTunes Wi-Fi Sync, select the computer you want to sync with, and tap the Sync Now button. Your iPad should sync wirelessly with your computer, and will now do so automatically whenever you have it plugged in and connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer.

The internet has had a dramatic effect on the way most of us choose and buy a wide variety of products. From the buyer's point of view, shopping online breaks new boundaries in convenience, because it means we can compare products for all the criteria which we can possibly consider when we buy, and then look for the outlet which offers the product we find best meets our needs at the lowest possible price. And yet, when we do this, apart from exceptional occasions when a website will publish its full registered address, most of us will give little or no thought to where our goods will be shipped from, and therefore the task which lies ahead for the delivery company which will ensure that those goods, ordered in a fraction of a second, in turn reach us safely and in the shortest time possible.

    Download the root folder from the following link and save it on your computer.
    On your preferred location, extract files from the archive.
    On your phone, navigate to Menu -> Settings -> Security and enable the “Unknown Sources” option.
    On your phone, enable the USB Debugging option from Menu -> Settings -> Developer options -> USB Debugging.
    Connect your device to the computer and transfer the folder to your device.

Creating a custom recovery image ~ Step by Step procedure:
After rooting an S3, custom recovery images can be created, as all Android systems have a recovery partition. This recovery image can later be used if the OS has crashed and to reflash the OS for device recovery.

    Launch the ROM Manager that you installed in the previous step and select Flash ClockworkMod Recovery and choose your device.
    When you select the Superuser prompt, choose the “Grant” option.
    The recovery image is created after it displays “Successfully flashed”.

Loading Custom ROMs ~ Step by step procedure:

Only if the device is rooted and a recovery image is created based on the steps mentioned above, Custom ROMs can be flashed into the device. All the different types of ROMs developed have their own differences, so try few and find which the best based on your usage.

    Select the ROM that you prefer based on your S3, then download it as a .zip file to your computer.
    Once downloaded, copy the .zip file without extracting, to the device’s SD card.
